Meeting Them at Their Age

- You'll learn the biggest single mistake with teenagers — asking about him directly — and the sideways move that works instead: asking about his world.
- Why it matters at this age
- Direct questions to a teenager feel like exposure. Questions about his friend, his song, his opinion on something in the news feel like conversation. He shows you himself either way — but only the second one keeps him talking.
- What you'll do next
- For a week you'll ask him nothing about himself. Only about the things and people he cares about. And you'll notice what he tells you about himself anyway.
The same question, worded for the wrong age, closes a conversation faster than any closed question. Meet the grandchild where his vocabulary, his patience, and his self-respect actually are.

Wisdom from the Proverbs
Proverbs 22:6
"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
'Start them off' assumes you meet them where they are, not where you wish they were. The way you speak to a five-year-old is not the way you speak to a fifteen-year-old — and Solomon knew it.
Proverbs 15:23
"A person finds joy in giving an apt reply — and how good is a timely word!"
'Apt' and 'timely' are age words. The same sentence is a blessing at nine and an insult at nineteen. Match the word to the age and you have given a gift; miss the age and you have given noise.
How Jesus did it
Mark 10:14
"'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'"
Jesus did not require children to grow up before He would talk with them. He came down to their level — literally, by taking them in His arms and blessing them.
1 Corinthians 3:2
"I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it."
Paul does not scold the Corinthians for needing milk. He simply feeds them milk. The same word at the wrong age is not wisdom — it is noise. Match the food to the mouth.
